iPhone Duo vs iPhone 18 Pro: What Apple's $1,999 Foldable Buys
Apple's first foldable, the iPhone Duo, starts at $1,999 with Touch ID back, while the A20 Pro and a $100 price rise redraw the case for the 18 Pro.
Apple's first foldable, the iPhone Duo, starts at $1,999 and ships October 23. The iPhone 18 Pro beside it costs $100 more than last year.
The September 9 "Surprise and Shine" keynote in Cupertino was the first under new CEO John Ternus, who took over from Tim Cook earlier in the month. It leaves two very different buying decisions: a first-generation foldable at a first-generation price, and a Pro line whose upgrade is internal.
What the iPhone Duo actually is
The Duo is a book-style foldable with a 5.4-inch outer display and a 7.6-inch inner screen, measuring 5.02mm thick when open. The frame is titanium with ceramic fiber reinforcement, and it carries ProMotion, multi-window support, and Apple Pencil support over USB-C arriving later in 2026.
The notable subtraction: Apple brought back Touch ID in the power button instead of Face ID. Buyers moving from a recent Pro should treat that as a daily-use change, not a spec-sheet footnote. Pricing is $1,999 for 256GB, or ¥15,999 in China, with pre-orders on October 16.
The A20 Pro is the real Pro upgrade
The Pro models get the A20 Pro, Apple's first iPhone chip on a 2-nanometer process. The configuration Apple described:
- A six-core CPU with two new super cores that Apple says run 20 percent faster
- Four efficiency cores carrying dedicated neural accelerators
- A seven-core GPU up to 40 percent faster than the A19 Pro
- A vapor chamber three times the area of the previous generation
The speed figures are Apple's own, without a stated benchmark, so treat the 20 and 40 percent as vendor numbers until independent testing lands. The structurally interesting item is the third one: putting neural accelerators on the efficiency cores points at background AI work that does not need the performance cores awake, which is a clearer signal of where on-device inference is heading than any of the percentage figures.
The main camera moves to 48 megapixels with a six-blade variable aperture that can open for light or stop down for depth of field. Battery ratings reach 36 hours of video on the Pro and 45 hours on the Pro Max, with wired charging to 50 percent in about 15 minutes.
Why everything costs $100 more
Both Pro phones cost $100 more than last year, and Apple attributed part of the increase to the global memory chip shortage.
That attribution is checkable. A KB Securities report dated September 7 found sellable memory inventory at Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix has fallen below ten days of supply, against the four to six weeks manufacturers normally hold. The cause is HBM4, which consumes roughly three times the wafer capacity of conventional DRAM per unit of capacity — every wafer shifted to AI memory removes phone memory from the same supply. This is the AI buildout showing up on a consumer price tag, and unlikely to be the last time.
Siri is still the open variable
The rebuilt Siri launches in beta in English first, with 16 languages planned including Simplified and Traditional Chinese, and it will not be available in mainland China at launch. The opening feature set is modest — spelling correction, point-the-camera-and-ask queries, and photo editing that changes a shot's spatial perspective. French, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese and Spanish arrive in October. Apple Intelligence runs on device where it can and hands off to Private Cloud Compute when it needs more, which Ternus described as keeping the data inaccessible even to Apple.
Which one to pre-order
If you want the foldable form factor, the Duo is the only Apple option and $1,999 is the cost of being first — accept the Touch ID change and the wait for Pencil support. If you want the best phone Apple makes, the 18 Pro Max is the stronger buy: the A20 Pro, the 45-hour video rating and the larger vapor chamber are in the product as sold, not promised for later in 2026 the way the Duo's Pencil support is.
If you are already on a recent Pro, the thing to watch is not the chip. It is whether Siri's beta expands past its opening feature set before the October language wave — that is the upgrade Apple is actually selling.
