Claude Adds Docs and Slides, Merges Cowork Into One Chat

Anthropic collapsed Claude's chat and Cowork front ends into a single interface on Tuesday and added two productivity tools, Docs and Slides, in beta.

The merge is the bigger structural change. TechCrunch reports the unified interface lets users reach chat, Cowork and Artifacts in one window, and that Claude Design — introduced in April for website and prototype design — now works anywhere within Claude.

Why the tabs went away

Anthropic said customers often struggled to pick the right tab for the right task. Under the new design, Claude routes requests automatically instead of making users switch tabs or windows.

The company's own framing, quoted by The Verge, is that Claude "can now figure out what a task needs, so what Cowork and Design can do is available from any conversation, with the context, skills, and connectors you already have." Anthropic says there is "nothing to turn on," and existing chat behaviour is unchanged.

What Docs and Slides actually do

For slides, users can ask Claude to create, edit and present decks, then download the result as a PDF or PowerPoint file. For documents, according to TechCrunch, users can work alongside Claude to create sections, ask questions and comment on completed parts.

The collaboration model is closer to Google Docs than to a chat export. The Verge reports Claude Docs start private, can be shared with other editors who work on the document at the same time, and that collaborators — including Claude — can leave comments that look like those on a Google Doc.

Output is link-addressable across devices. Anthropic says "anything you make with Claude Design, Slides, or Docs lives at one shareable link you can open on your phone." TechCrunch adds that you can start a document on desktop and check the task's progress from the mobile app.

Who gets it, and when

Rollout starts with Pro and Max subscribers on web, desktop and mobile over the coming weeks. Team and free tiers come later, with no date attached.

That ordering matters if you were planning around it. The paid-first sequence means teams on the Team plan — the tier most likely to want shared documents — are not in the first wave.

The Google comparison is the point

The Verge frames the release as closing a gap: Anthropic's models are generally seen as more advanced, while Google's advantage has been native ties into its productivity suite. Google expanded Gemini's role in Docs, Sheets and Slides earlier this year, including a Gemini chat window in Docs and slide generation.

Docs and Slides do not match that surface area. What they do is remove the most common reason to leave a Claude conversation mid-task — which is a retention play more than a productivity-suite launch.

What to watch

Two things. Whether Team-tier access arrives close behind Pro and Max, since shared editing is worth little to a single user. And whether automatic routing holds up: removing the tab picker means Claude now has to infer what a task needs, and a wrong inference is harder to correct than a wrong tab.

The update follows an upgrade to Cowork's memory layer, which carries user context across chats — the same direction of travel, with fewer places for the work to live.
