ChatGPT's Chrome Extension Can Now Read Your Open Tabs
OpenAI's Chrome extension now reads your open tabs, and ChatGPT Work can fill forms, send messages and download files. What it touches, and what to scope.

OpenAI's ChatGPT extension for Google Chrome can now read the tabs you already have open, and in ChatGPT Work it can act on them.
What shipped
With the extension installed, OpenAI says ChatGPT can view your browser tabs when you tag Chrome in ChatGPT's web or desktop app. The company posted a demo video showing someone asking ChatGPT to compare the three tabs they had open with sofas they were considering. The upgrade arrives now that OpenAI's standalone ChatGPT Atlas browser is gone — the extension, not a separate browser, is the path into your browsing session.
The sidebar got the second half of the update: ChatGPT in the Chrome sidebar now carries what OpenAI calls "the full power of ChatGPT" plus your entire conversation history in Chat or Work, without leaving the page you are on.
What it can touch
Reading tabs is the conservative half. The update also lets ChatGPT Work "control" your Chrome tabs for tasks like "sending messages, filling out forms, or downloading files," as well as organize or group open tabs. The Verge compares that capability to Google's Gemini-powered "auto browse" feature.
OpenAI's own sample queries are the clearest statement of the target use case:
"Use the details in this event brief to fill out the registration form, and stop before submitting."
"Put the vendors in these tabs into my comparison sheet, with pricing, key features, and source links."
"Look at all the tabs I have open and compare the contractor services. Then draft an email to the one that fits my home renovation."
Note the phrase "stop before submitting" in OpenAI's own example. The vendor's sample prompt builds in a human checkpoint before the irreversible step — a reasonable default to copy, since nothing in the feature description says the agent will pause on its own.
The same-day context: everyone wants the buying flow
Hours earlier, Google began rolling out Universal Cart in the US across Google Search and the Gemini app — the tool it previewed at I/O in May. It saves products from multiple retailers in one cart, sends price-drop and restock notifications, surfaces promo codes, and, paired with Google Wallet, can analyze the perks on each of your saved credit cards to suggest a payment method. Gmail and YouTube integration is planned with no announced timeline.
The Verge frames the launch as a crowded race: OpenAI and Meta have both launched agentic assistants that shop on the user's behalf, and Shopify recently opened its platform to more AI agents browsing and purchasing from listings. The sofa-comparison demo is not a coincidence — tab reading and universal carts are two routes to the same destination, which is the checkout page.
Is it worth installing?
If your work is comparison-shaped — vendors, quotes, specs spread across a dozen tabs — reading tabs removes the copy-paste step, and that is a real saving with a low blast radius. Granting tab control to ChatGPT Work is a different decision: form-filling, message-sending and file downloads are write actions on whatever session is already authenticated in that browser, so scope it to a profile that is not logged into anything you would not want an agent to touch.
What to watch next: whether tab control stays limited to ChatGPT Work or reaches consumer accounts, and whether OpenAI publishes any per-action confirmation behavior rather than leaving the checkpoint to the wording of your prompt.
