Android's Five New Features: Motion Assist Needs Android 17

Google is shipping five new Android features, and each one lands behind a different version gate — Motion Assist is Android 17 only.

The rollout was announced in a Google blog post on Tuesday and covers accessibility, item tracking, and Google Messages personalization. TechCrunch's read is that some of it is Google "playing catch-up to Apple, which already offers similar features for iPhone users," while other parts "specifically leverage Gemini."

Motion Assist: the one with the strictest requirement

Motion Assist targets motion sickness while using a phone in a moving vehicle. It puts a bubble overlay on the screen that moves in response to the vehicle's motion, narrowing the gap between what your eyes see and what your body feels.

You can set it to turn on automatically, add it to Quick Settings, and customize the bubble's shape, color, and transparency. It is available to Android 17 users — the tightest gate in this drop.

The idea is not new. Apple shipped Vehicle Motion Cues in 2024, using animated dots around the edges of the display that move with the vehicle. Google's version is a single configurable bubble rather than edge dots.

Guided Vision reaches much further back

Guided Vision is built for blind and low-vision users and pairs the phone camera with Gemini: reading small print on a food label, viewing a menu in a dark restaurant, identifying objects around the house. It also gives voice guidance when the camera is aimed wrong, telling you to move the phone, pan around, or center an object.

Its requirement is the loosest here — Android 9 and newer, in countries where Gemini is available. That second condition is the real limiter, not the OS version.

Find Hub starts remembering where you put things

A new "remembered items" section in Find Hub lets you tell Gemini where you stored something — Google's example is saying you put your passport in a bedroom drawer — and Gemini saves it. You can attach a photo to make the item easier to identify later. This is manual entry, not automatic detection: the feature only knows what you tell it.

Google Messages gets Keep, and per-chat theming

A Google Keep integration lets people share and edit grocery lists, vacation notes, and similar content directly inside a conversation. Separately, individual chats can be customized with backgrounds, photos, and colors, with text bubbles matching automatically. Apple added a similar custom background feature to Messages last year.

What to watch

• Whether Motion Assist ever moves off Android 17. Guided Vision going back to Android 9 shows Google can ship Gemini features to old hardware when it wants to. Motion Assist is an overlay, not a model call, so the Android 17 gate is a choice worth watching rather than an obvious technical floor.
• Gemini country availability. For Guided Vision, that list decides who gets the most useful feature in this drop — check it before assuming an Android 9 phone qualifies.
• No rollout dates were given for any of the five beyond the announcement itself. Treat "rolling out" as staged.
